I nominate the reimagined BattleZone from 1998. It’s quite an exciting concept: marrying a FPS / vehicular combat game with a real-time strategy. I remember its first-person RTS interface / squad commanding being complimented quite a bit in reviews. Not sure how it fares retrospectively, but it certainly feels like a game ahead of its time – there was a lot of innovation in Windows games in the later half of the 90s!
I didn’t have a Windows machine at home at the time, but this was one of the few games I was able to try out when my school friends held LAN parties. I certainly remember it being a very cool game!
