I’m only up to mission 8 and even on “Wimp” difficulty, this game is hard. Here’s what I’ve found so far:

      • Take any salvage that’s better than what you have, even in worse condition
      • Repair the best, damaged equipment you have for the mission after current one
      • Trade side armor for front and rear
      • Press F1 to use the HUD-only view when speed matters, it has speedometer visible without having to look down
      • Oil slicks and block boxes are tricky to switch to and position effectively. Practice in melee and adjust your controls.
      • Consider using this vehicle swap trick before you get too far into the campaign. It won’t work on earlier bookmarks (saves), only a new campaign
      • Mission 5: slow a lot ahead of turns, better to be slow on parts of the track than flying off. Others will make mistakes that let you pass.
      • Mission 7′ when the fight starts run away to a brown barn that’s off the dirt road, hide inside with engine off until helicopter leaves, then destroy the cars nearby until they open the blockage

I had a good go today and these tips were very helpful! Still can’t win the stupid race (mission 5) but I’ll get there…

Race in mission 5 is tricky, but I managed it on ‘Champ’ difficulty. (By accident when I was trying to cheat before I realized cheats block progression.)

Main thing for me was slowing ahead of the turns, joystick controls, and repeating until other cars messed up which let me pass them easily. Some guides said to use nitro or lighten car by under weighting load out. Yet you’ll still need weapons for the fight after the race.

Oh, and if front weapons get destroyed you can use the handgun or drive in reverse with the backwards facing 3rd person view (F3 or F4 I think).

Is anybody playing it with a steering wheel?
I played it for a short while with steering wheel.
      Felt really immersive.

Say more @poweruppete! I’d love a wheel but this game is so finicky about joysticks. Also hate the old wheels I used to have with only like 90 degrees of movement. Do any older wheels rotate full 360? Ideally hoping to find one that’s compatible back to Windows 95, or a modern one with drivers that can work that far back.

If I get a bit of downtime off work over the next week or so I’ll try my Logitech momo wheel, which I’m expecting is slightly too new to work.
