I feel like this part of the forum is made for me….
Here’s a shot of my PC/gaming corner: PIC
You can see my original vogons post here.
I have three ‘stations’ that each have 2 or so PCs hooked up to them.
The one on the left is my 2000s+ computer set up consisting of:
Dell 2423 montior
Fiio K7 DAC/Headphone amp
Creative T60 speakers
Cherry keyboard (blue switches)
Cherry Ps/2 oopitical mouse (since upgraded to a Logitech G203)
There are two PC’s plugged into this.
The first is THOR, a Pentium 4-based windows 98 build. This one is for high-res win98 gaming a little bit of DOS gaming. Specs are:
OS: Windows 98SE (Primary), Windows 2000 (Secondary), Windows ME (Secondary)
CPU: Pentium 4 HT 3.0ghz (Prescott) with Zalman CNPS7700 cooler
Motherboard: Intel D865GBF (i865 Chipset)
RAM: 2x256mb DDR2 RAM (512mb total)
Graphics: Abit Siluro Geforce 4 ti 4200 128mb
Sound: Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS, Yamaha YMF-754
120gb SDD in a caddy (I can swap in different drives with different OSs loaded on them, I’ve set this up for windows 2000 and ME also)
Optical drive: Samsung DVD/CDRW drive
Case: Corsair Carbide 100R
PSU: NZXT C650
Second computer, JUPITER, is for overkill XP-gaming, but also competently handles more modern games under windows 10, so I dual boot
OS: Windows XP, Windows 10
CPU: i7-3770k
Motherboard: Intel DH77kc
RAM: 4x4gb DDR3 RAM (16gb total) – for win XP I run the 32-bit version so it only uses 4gb obviously
Graphics: Nvidia 980ti
Sound: Sound Blaster X-Fi titanium
Storage: 2x 500gb Samsung SSDs
Optical drive: Asus DVD/CDRW drive
Case: Silverstone G09
PSU: EVGA 500br
The sound cards plug into the headphone amp via coax and optical so the sound is super high quality.
The second (beige) station is for 90s gaming:
Philips 107e5 CRT Monitor
Boston Acoustics speakers
Leopold keyboard (speed silver switches)
Another Cherry Ps/2 opitical mouse (sucks, replaced recently with Microsoft intellimouse)
There are two computers hooked up to this:
NEPTUNE: A Pentium III windows 98 machine built for glide gaming
OS: Windows 98SE
CPU: Pentium III 600E (Coppermine, SL43E)
Motherboard: ASUS P3B-F Slot 1 Rev 1.04, Intel 440bx Chipset, 1x ISA slot
RAM: 256mb SDRAM
Graphics: 3Dfx Voodoo 3 2000
Sound: Soundblaster Audigy 2 (SB0240), PicoGUS
Storage: 40gb Seagate barracuda IDE, NEC-based USB 2.0 PCI card, Generic BTC DVD/CDRW drive

Case: Enlight EN 7230 ATX
PSU: Enlight EN-8341934
In the corner of the pic is a stack of stuff:
Roland MT-32 Old
Aforementioned win XP/10 machine
A 2U rack containing:
Behringer Euro Rack 1602 mixer
Roland SC-88ST
Rextron KVM
Server in a fractal design meshy 2 case (on the bottom), running UNRAID (i7-12700, 32gb RAM, Radeon rx6600 xt)
This houses my sound set up for the 1990s PCs. The server runs a Debian VM running retroNAS. All the retro PCs are hooked up to a switch (not pictured, tucked into the corner) that is then hooked into my server via a separate network interface, so they’re essentially on their own isolated network. The server then serves up all my games/drivers/retro files etc via SMB1, which makes life soooo much easier. The server does a bunch of other stuff, emby streaming, Bazzite VM for (limited) modern gaming
Then the set up to the right is my main desk with a CalDigit Thunderbolt doc (for my main computer – a MacBook Air), Topping E2x2 interface, Razer cobra mouse, Leopold mechanical keyboard with silent red switches, AOC q27G4 monitor, Alesis m2 monitors (from about 2009). The box under this desk is my back up server, also running UNRAID. I have a few other keyboards to swap out from time to time – Unicomp model M Mini and a keychron TKL with Gateron blacks. I use this for work, a bit of gaming, a bit of music production.
In addition to this, I’m working on a couple of XP builds… one targeting 2003 based on an Abit NF7-S motherboard and athlon XP CPU I picked up a while ago, and other around 2008 based on a core2quad Q6600 CPU…. but those are for another day.
Incredible, you’ve got everything covered haha!
Anything you are still looking to add or you’ve reached the peak and now just need to finish the backlog of games?
Very impressive spread! And it all looks very clean, well done. Someday I’d like to do cable hiding or at least make them more organized.
Have you had the chance to enjoy LAN multi-player using that setup?
Thanks guys I am quite proud of this set up.
re: things I need to add: honestly, it would only be niche stuff at this point that probably supports like 3 games, so I don’t think so. The two builds I am looking into I suppose? But they are really just for the fun of playing with hardware.
I’d say the big missing piece for my MIDI setup is a Roland CM32L – ie with the wider set of sounds than the MT-32 for games like monkey island 2. I’m going to Japan in January so will be hunting for one there. I can also use an old laptop with MUNT to cover that off.
The other thing would be a CRT that can do 1600×1200 resolution, but they’re BIG and I probably don’t have the space, so very much a nice to have and I can’t see me bothering to get one.
re: LAN – I briefly tried DOOM95, the problem is the two stations are very close together so it would be a very cramped LAN session! But would be possible on win 98 where I can pit the P4 vs. the P3.
I love the theme of that pic. Doom for all generations! 😛
There was a brief period of time, maybe some 20 years back, when I had two DOS machines connected in LAN. I was excited that I can play multiplayer Doom. But in the end I didn’t get to play more than a couple of times, at best. The world has moved on at that point. 😀
Nowadays if I want to do some DOS LAN gaming, it is easy to do via DOSBOX IPX over TCP/IP emulation. I have a friend with whom we play Duke Nukem 3D from time to time.
The other thing would be a CRT that can do 1600×1200 resolution, but they’re BIG and I probably don’t have the space, so very much a nice to have and I can’t see me bothering to get one.
Haha yes, we all want out 21″ CRTs back, but like you’ve said we’ve all quickly forgotten just how physically large those screens were!
I look forward to you posting pictures of each quarter’s game running on one of your Retro beasts 🙂
