Let me re-iterate the title, I mean the original single player game from 1998, not the arena shooters that came later.
I think Unreal deserves more love – it kind of got overshadowed by contemporaries like Half-Life and Quake II.
But in many ways I like it better, particularly the visuals. While those other two games were dreary and grey, Unreal was a rich, vibrant feast for the eyes.

After seeing a recent 3Dfx explainer, Unreal really did look surreal on that hardware. Even modern Nvidia cards don’t really do it justice. I wonder if the 3Dfx emulation will ever get good enough to reproduce this game in its original glory.

I haven’t played it in 3dfX unfortunately – I have a mere TNT card in my Pentium II, and I can’t justify the eye-watering prices voodoo cards go for these days.
I get the feeling the youtube videos don’t do it justice either…
